Aside from the obvious joke here about which one is the dummy, I’ll wager that you had no idea that Alconbury Weald is the home of one of the world’s leading developers of crash test technology?
I recently visited the Encocam Group at their Alconbury Weald HQ and had the opportunity for a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour of their crash test dummy development, manufacturing, assembly and certification hub under their Cellbond brand.
Cellbond are one of the world leaders in developing crash test safety equipment, which includes the deformable barriers and of course, crash test dummies.
We’ve all seen slow motion footage of cars being crash tested in controlled environments, but the dummies themselves are much more high tech than you might imagine, and inside each one are an array of sensors, monitors and accelerometers designed to measure and analyse crash impacts. Each one costs hundred of thousands of pounds.
This is yet another example of the incredible technology and world leading firms we have here in Huntingdon. There is a huge opportunity to help grow and support these companies and the highly technical jobs they provide.
My thanks to Dr Mike Ashmead and the team for giving me an insight into his business and the work they do.
