A fantastic visit to Houghton Mill earlier this week to meet with the National Trust and find out more about the site.
In its current guise the mill dates back to the 18th Century and along the way has variously been a youth hostel and now also has a campsite in Waterclose Meadows next door. It also has a hydroelectric generator which offsets 50% of its power usage.
The mill is still a working mill and still makes flour traditionally from locally sourced wheat at weekends. You can buy the flour in the shop and it’s also used to make the cakes and scones in the tearoom. The mill also provides a learning resource for schools . You can even have your wedding ceremony there.
There are also a host of outdoor activities to do including canoeing and paddleboarding.
My thanks to Lydia and Emma for showing me round, and also for letting me have a go at making flour by hand; it really is much harder than it looks!
