But did you know that the diarist Samuel Pepys, who wrote the most widely known account of the Great Fire lived in Brampton?
As you head from Huntingdon to Brampton on the Huntingdon Road, the first house on the left is Pepys House the home of Samuel Pepys,
It was great to find out more about the Grade 1 listed house, which has stood in Brampton since the late 16th Century, even having some of the oldest examples of glazed windows anywhere in the country.
I was able to speak to Paul Gray (Chairman of the Trustees) and Lady Jemima Montagu (President of the club and direct descendant of Pepys’s cousin and patron, the 1st Earl of Sandwich, and sister of the current 12th Earl) about the plans to make the house more visitable and the Lottery-funded resilience project for the house.
It would be great to ensure the house is included within Huntingdonshire’s wider historical tourism and spread the word about this incredible piece of the country’s history right on our doorstep.
My thanks too to Chip for the tour.
