It was wonderful yesterday to visit Hamerton Zoo and to have the opportunity to see an incredible range of animals, many of which I’ve never seen before. A fantastic family day out.
The zoo has an incredible collection of animals, the majority of which are endangered and a number of whom, like the possums and the fearsome looking brown hyena are the only animals of their type in the country.
The zoo’s breeding programme has been extremely successful and has allowed them to breed some of these endangered species and then send them to other zoos to continue to increase the numbers of these species. Conservation efforts are very much the key focus.
As per the picture it was also a real treat to get to meet, and feed, the meerkats. The meerkats are all named after crisps, and it was a pleasure to meet Pringle, Quaver, Dorito and Frazzle who at 14 years old is well into her nineties in human years. Not a single one attempted to seek me car insurance.
The zoo has recently had a brand new huck-tek playground installed and amongst the forth in in big events are Cheetah Day (16th August) and Fat Bear week as they prepare for hibernation from 3rd-10th October.
My thanks to Ayesha and Ed for taking me round the zoo and telling me so much about the zoo’s plans.
