Really enjoyed visiting Saragusta Spirits in Buckden, a local independent gin distillery.
The company was founded by James and Alison during Covid, turning a long-time passion into a business and one that is now steadily growing. They focus on crafting high-quality spirits using locally sourced ingredients, with a strong commitment to sustainability, traditional distilling methods, and supporting the local community.
You may have seen them at one of the beer festivals or village fetes during the summer (I bought a bottle at the Alconbury village fete), or had one whilst out and about locally somewhere like The Old Bridge, but you may not have known just how homegrown they were.
It was fantastic to learn more about the gin making process and hear more about their plans to grown their range of drinks. We also discussed some of the challenges faced by small independent distilleries. I’ve raised the question of Small Producer Refief on alcohol duty with the Treasury; it’s vital that we encourage entrepreneurs to thrive and this duty is currently holding back Saragusta and hundreds of other businesses like them.
My thanks to James and Alison for taking the time to show me their distillery. Do look out for their bottles behind the bar and support a local business.
